# major skill

> Create, clone, and list file-based skills from the CLI.

`major skill` manages [skills](/learn/skills/overview) as local folders. A skill folder must have a `SKILL.md` at its root and can hold any other files the skill needs, such as references and scripts. A `.major/config.json` links the folder to the skill. Once you have a folder, edit the files and use [`major validate`, `major push`, and `major publish`](/reference/cli/sync) to save and release changes.

The skill's name comes from the `SKILL.md` frontmatter, so `major skill create` does not take a name.

Every `major skill` subcommand accepts `--json` to print one JSON result.

## major skill list

List the skills in your organization, with their IDs and status.

| `--include-read-only` | Include skills you can see but not edit. |

## major skill create

Create a new skill and set up a local folder for it. The directory must not exist yet.

major skill create <dir>

major skill create invoice-lookup
```

## major skill clone

Download an existing skill's latest saved version into a new local folder. Without `--id`, you pick from the skills you can edit.

major skill clone [flags]
```

| `--id` | Skill ID. Required with `--non-interactive`. |
| `--dir` | New directory. Defaults to the skill ID. |
