Every app is backed by a Git repository. By default, Major creates those repositories in Major’s own GitHub organization. Install the Major GitHub App to have Major create new repositories inside your GitHub organization instead. We recommend this for better speed and security. Each Major organization links to exactly one GitHub organization.
Only organization Admins can install or disconnect the GitHub App. Other members see a message asking them to contact an admin.

Install the GitHub App

  1. Go to Settings > GitHub App.
  2. Click Install GitHub App. GitHub opens in a new tab.
  3. Choose the GitHub organization to install the app on. Personal GitHub accounts are not supported.
  4. Choose which repositories the app can access, then click Install.
  5. GitHub redirects you back to Major, which saves the installation. You see a GitHub app connected confirmation.
The Configure GitHub App card now shows a Connected badge, your GitHub organization name, and the installation ID.
The installation is tied to the Major organization you started it from. If GitHub redirects back to a different Major organization, the connection fails with “The installation was created for a different organization.” Switch to the right organization and install again.

What changes after you connect

  • New apps get their repository in your GitHub organization.
  • Existing apps keep their repository in Major’s GitHub organization. Nothing is moved.
  • The Repositories created in your GitHub table lists each app whose repository lives in your GitHub organization, with a link to the repository.
You still give people access to a repository through Major. major app create and major app clone add your GitHub username as a collaborator. See major user gitconfig.

Manage the installation

Click Manage on GitHub to open the installation settings in your GitHub organization. From there you can change which repositories the app can access.
If you limit the app to selected repositories, make sure it keeps access to the repositories your Major apps use. Without access, the editor and CLI cannot work with those apps.

Disconnect

Click Disconnect on the Configure GitHub App card and confirm. Major uninstalls the app from your GitHub organization and unlinks it. After you disconnect:
  • Apps whose repositories live in your GitHub organization are no longer accessible by Major. The CLI and the web editor stop working for those apps.
  • The repositories themselves stay in your GitHub organization. Major does not delete them.
  • New apps are created in Major’s GitHub organization again.

Common questions
